Trauma & Resilience Education for the Judiciary is FSU’s newest online training providing foundational knowledge on trauma and resilience specifically for judicial officers. The two-hour course consists of interactive modules including foundational trauma science, the impact of trauma, approaches to mitigating trauma, and application of trauma-responsive court practices.

Who is the Focus?

This training is specifically for court administrators and officers, judges and magistrates in any type of court. Additional modules will soon be available which are customized for Dependency and Family Court.

Why Focus on Courts for Trauma Education?

  • Courts are trauma centers. Everyone coming to court has been impacted by trauma whether Dependency, Delinquency, Criminal, Drug Court, Family or Divorce Court, Veteran’s Court or other problem-solving courts. The judiciary can make court experience more traumatizing or less, depending on their interactions.
  • The pipeline of trauma-to-prison research details the toxic impact of trauma and maladaptive coping behaviors which may increase the likelihood of court involvement.
  • Understanding the trauma and resilience science can help the judiciary make better informed decisions that help promote therapeutic jurisprudence rather than exacerbate trauma.
