Description:

The development of mutually rewarding interactions, behavioral self-regulation, social skills, learning, and lifespan health all depend on the emerging abilities of parents and other primary caregivers to handle and successfully adapt to stress (from internal and external sources), feel loved and supported by significant partners, understand stages of early childhood behavior and development, and feel pride and satisfaction from the effort of childrearing.

Dr. Gorski will discuss the power of early relationships to effect long-term physical and emotional health. He will also talk about the common sources of potentially toxic stress, and highlight the importance of organized and personalized child and family support from professionals, programs and policies to give children an optimal start to happy and healthy lives.

Dr. Gorski will review exciting research that links brain development, behavioral regulation, and social engagement during infancy and early childhood with the presence or absence of positive attention and emotional attunement (versus chronic stress) in relationships between infants and their caregivers.

Description:

Substance abuse is an area of great concern for home visitors working with high risk pregnant women and parents of young children. Every 25 minutes a baby is born suffering from opioid withdrawal and studies show more than 70 million children live with parents who are dealing with addiction. Parents who abuse controlled substances have a higher risk of abusing their children.

Dr. Neil Boris, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, will discuss addiction as a social connection problem with known root causes. People most likely to suffer from addiction also have trauma histories. Dr. Boris will discuss strategies home visitors might use to help people improve their social networks and address the root causes of their addiction.

Drs Christine Chiricos and Terry Hoover will briefly discuss a tool that identifies Topics, Purposes, and Handouts found in the Partners for a Healthy Baby home visiting curriculum to support families struggling with substance abuse. This valuable tool will shorten home visit planning time and facilitate delivery of effective support for families.

Description:

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a significant threat to the safety and well-being of women and children. Pregnancy may increase a woman's risk of being abused and children may be impacted by the abuse even before birth. The impact on women and the profound effects on children who are exposed to such violence will be discussed during this webinar. Home visitors are uniquely positioned to screen families for IPV and to respond by helping to meet survivors' self-identified safety needs. During this webinar home visitors will learn about building a partnership with domestic violence survivors that increases child safety.

Drs Chiricos and Hoover will discuss a tool that identifies topics, purposes, and handouts found in the Partners for a Healthy Baby home visiting curriculum to support families who are at risk for or experiencing IPV. They will discuss how this content is organized and explain the research that informs it. This valuable tool will shorten home visit planning time and facilitate delivery of effective support for families dealing with IPV. Ms Carlson will share empowering strategies for working with women surviving IPV and provide information about resources that are available throughout the state of Florida for survivors and their children.

Description:

Depression is common among mothers enrolled in home visiting programs. Research indicates that up to half of these mothers experience clinically significant levels of depression during participation in home visiting services. If left unaddressed, depression undermines many home visiting outcomes and is a primary risk factor for poor pregnancy and birth outcomes and child development concerns and issues. Home visitors are uniquely positioned to engage depressed moms and dads and promote entry to treatment. Many home visitors use the Partners for a Healthy Baby home visiting curriculum to support moms and dads at risk for or struggling with depression. Participants will be provided a valuable tool identifying topics, purposes, and handouts addressing stress, depression, and support found in the Partners curriculum. This tool will shorten home visit planning time and facilitate delivery of effective support for families dealing with stress and depression. We will discuss how this content is organized and explain the research that informs it.
