Substance abuse is an area of great concern for home visitors working with high risk pregnant women and parents of young children. Every 25 minutes a baby is born suffering from opioid withdrawal and studies show more than 70 million children live with parents who are dealing with addiction. Parents who abuse controlled substances have a higher risk of abusing their children.

Dr. Neil Boris, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, will discuss addiction as a social connection problem with known root causes. People most likely to suffer from addiction also have trauma histories. Dr. Boris will discuss strategies home visitors might use to help people improve their social networks and address the root causes of their addiction.

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a significant threat to the safety and well-being of women and children. Pregnancy may increase a woman's risk of being abused and children may be impacted by the abuse even before birth. The impact on women and the profound effects on children who are exposed to such violence will be discussed during this webinar. Home visitors are uniquely positioned to screen families for IPV and to respond by helping to meet survivors' self-identified safety needs. She received her Bachelor's degree in Psychology and her Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Kentucky. She is currently the President and CEO of The Florida Center for Early Childhood in Sarasota, whose mission is the healthy development of young children, their families, and communities. Kathryn is a national trainer in infant/young children's mental health and a Field Trainer for SAMHSA FASD Center for Excellence, sharing her professional expertise and personal stories of raising Seth, her adopted son with fetal alcohol syndrome. Kathryn has been a consultant to the Alaska Department of Health, is the FASD Florida state coordinator to the National Association of FASD State Coordinators, and is past president of the Florida Association for Infant Mental Health.
